Children and Youth Ministry Weekly Newsletter

This Sunday 8/25

Welcome and Homecoming Breakfast for RE Families --Sunday 8/25 at 9:30.
Come for a simple breakfast.  The breakfast is free but donations are welcome. -- Fun and fellowship for families before the Homecoming Service.  RSVP here so we will know how many folks to expect.

This Sunday 8/25-A Multigenerational Homecoming Service
Our annual multigenerational homecoming celebration features a water communion (as usual), with a special call to join the NAACP and Forward Together in the struggle to make North Carolina a state with equality and opportunity for all its citizens.  Reverend Gary Kowalski, our new interim minister, will tell the traditional African story of Abiyoyo, with a message about standing up to bullies that all ages can appreciate.  Please remember to bring a small container of water from your home or summer travels as we reconnect with friends and renew our diverse faith community.
There will be childcare during the service for children ages 0-5 years.

Cottage Meeting Opportunities
Have you shared your opinions (about what you think is working at the church, what needs improvement, and what qualities you want to see in our next minister) with the Search Committee at a Cottage Meeting?  You have one more chance!  The final meeting is Sunday, August 25th at 11:45.

This Sunday High Schoolers Go Out to Lunch After Service
There is going to be High School Row in the service for youth who want to sit together and High Schoolers are going out for lunch at Weaver Street Market.  If you want to go out to lunch afterwards, youth will be gathering at the fireplace in the Jones Building.  Look for Franklin Hirsch who is coordinating it.

Cottage Meeting for High School Youth on Sunday August 25 at 6 -7:30 PM
The search committee will be meeting with High School Youth as well.  Rising 9th graders and graduate Seniors also welcome.  There will pizza from 6-6:30.  Please RSVP to Marion for pizza.  Encourage your youth to be part of the process!

Upcoming Events

All Church Potluck Picnic -- Saturday 9/7 5-8 PM at Camp New Hope
New Hope Camp is located about twenty minutes north of our church on Hwy 86.  It is a lovely wooded setting with covered eating space, nearby bathrooms and plenty of parking.  There are soccer goals, volleyball nets, and playgrounds nearby.  Bring balls, frisbees, jump ropes and/or hula hoops.  If you would like to stay for the campfire, bring a chair.  Please plan to bring a dish to share and your own drinks.  Water will be provided.  There will be games for little ones ready to play any time: giant tic-tac-toe, giant bubbles, parachute games and more.  Then after dinner we will have group games: balloon squeeze, spoon races, sack races, three-legged races, tug-of-war, and more. Fall Children's Program begins on Sept. 8 when we go to 2 services
Please register for Fall Children's Program and Parent Involvement
It really helps in planning to know who is coming!
On-line Registration Here.
On-line Parent Involvement  Here.
All  parents are expected to participate in the Parent Cooperative (1.5 to 2 hours per month). There are lots of options that work.  Your involvement makes our program stronger.

Community Church Camping Trip:
Join your church community for a weekend of multigenerational camping and fellowship November 9th to 11that Morrow Mountain State Park (about a 2 hour drive).  This should be a nice cool weekend, perfect for leaf-peeping (and Monday is Veterans Day).  We’ve reserved group campsites and there are also cabins available (as well as individual sites with electricity if you need it).  The deadline to register will be September 30th.  Email Jenny Warnasch, jjw@nc.rr.com, for more information.

Middle School Youth Group Begins Sunday September 8 at 4:30.
The Middle School Youth Group will meet and the Annual Middle School Parent Meeting will be concurrent.  It will be followed by a Potluck Youth Family Dinner at 6:00. Even if your youth will not be regularly participating in the Middle School Youth Group this fall we would like youth and parents to attend this first meeting because of the parent meeting for the Middle School Youth Program.  It is a chance to find out out about the whole program and get information about this year. We would like families to attend the dinner as well.  The dinner will be a potluck.  On-line Sign Up for Dinner is here.

Middle School Shelter Neck Retreat is Fri Sept.13-Sun Sept 15.
The opening retreat is a great way for youth to really get to know each other and jump start friendships and connections.  Sign up here.  Note: the retreat is dependent on getting enough adult drivers and chaperones so if you can help us out and experience the wonders of Shelter Neck that would be great.  If you are interested in chaperoning and want more information about what is involved and how you and your youth can be there together please let me know.  The retreat is $35 per person and includes room and board at the retreat.

Cottage Meeting for Middle School Youth on Sunday Sep. 22 at 4:30
The search committee will be meeting with Middle School Youth as well.  This will be during the regular Middle School Youth Group that meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday afternoons.  Encourage your youth to be part of the process!

Parent Covenant Group--2nd Sundays 4:30-6 PM During Middle School Youth Group
Last year's parent covenant group was a big success and so we are doing it again this year.  The theme will be parenting and it will be led by Laurie McDonald and Dave Klibanow. More information about the theme to follow.  The Covenant Group is followed by the Youth Family Dinner each month which allows people to deepen friendships. Covenant groups are a great way to really get to know other adults in the congregation and an opportunity to participate in the spiritual practice of deep listening.  Covenant Groups meet once a month and do require a committment to attend all or almost all the sessions.  (8 of the 10 sessions for the year). If interested sign up by contact Marion via email or signing up at the Covenant Group Table after church.

High School Youth Group Begins Sunday September 8 with Family Dinner at 6:00, followed by Parent Meeting at 6:45 while High Youth Group Meets Concurrently
We would like all parents to attend the dinner, followed by the parent meeting.  The dinner will be a potluck.  On-line Sign Up for Dinner is here.

High School Shelter Neck Retreat is Fri Sept.20-Sun 22.
The opening retreat is a great way for youth to really get to know each other and jump start friendships and connections. Please sign up here.

High School Youth are Encouraged to Attend the Sunday Worship Service at 11:15--Fun in Numbers--Two new inatiatives
