Children's Choir
The Children’s Choir at the Community Church, with a few exceptions, is made up of children from Elementary School through Middle School, and the general make-up of the group is between the ages of 7-11. We sing at all Multi-Generational services throughout the year.
During the school year, we generally meet for an hour every other Saturday morning at 10am in the Straley Room, and for 30 minutes prior to any service where we sing. When involved with the Sunday service, we usually sing at both services, meeting at 8:45am for a rehearsal, and enjoying bagels and juice in the Music Office between services. Singing in the second service is usually scheduled early, so the children and parents can leave without staying for the entire 2nd service. Material for the Children’s Choir is usually unison, although we have had success with simple 2-part harmony arrangements and rounds. Solos are usually created for everyone who wants one, within the context of each piece, so all of the children can have a chance to shine on their own. Music is chosen from various sources, including "May This Light Shine," the children's songbook published by the UU Musician's Network, and arranged especially for the members of the Children's Choir. There are often MP3 audio files made available online for home study, which have the music for each piece, with, if appropriate, separate files emphasizing each vocal part. The Children's Choir have also composed songs for themselves, including “Rising Up” and “Special Moments” for the Rising Up service, and “Thank You” for the Thanksgiving Service. Otherwise, the music covers a wide range of styles, and is always chosen with the service topic in mind. In this past church year, for instance, the Children's Choir has performed:
