Opportunities to DEFEND DEMOCRACY

We will hold signs written with signs of fascism spaced out about 25 feet apart along Franklin Street working in two shifts
- 9:30- 9:45 orientation and preparation 9:45-10:30 holding a sign.
- 10:15-10:30 orientation and preparation 10:30-11:15 holding a sign
Also on the Day of Service:
Know Your Rights Training, 3:30pm-5:30pm Build your skills to safely defend our neighbors and defend democracy. Learn about your personal rights in many situations when dealing with law enforcement when lawfully protesting.
GET YOUR ANTI - FASCIST HAT!! During WWII, members of the Resistance in Norway wore hats like this until the Nazis made it illegal. Now the Melt the ICE movement is wearing them again. Side With Love will provide a hand-knitted hat for you for a suggested donation of $25. Funds raised will support the cost of our church sponsoring the No Kings III protest. Let us know if you want one, or can knit some, or if you have red yarn to donate.
Classical Concert for a Cause
Resilience and Heroism --a Classical Concert for a Cause
Sunday, March 29 3:00 p.m.
at the Community Church of Chapel Hill.
The two contrasting compositions on the program, the Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano (H300) by Bohuslav Martinu and the Cello Sonata in F Major, Op. 6 by Ricard Strauss, exemplify the best of the human spirit. Join us to support the Immigrant Justice Initiative at Community Church, and enjoy the ebullience of Martinu following his escape from Paris during the Nazi invasion and the triumphant, youthful energy of Ricard Strauss, at the beginning of his creative life. The musicians are Debbie Davis, cellist, a member of C3HUU, Deborah Hollis, pianist and Brooks de Wetter-Smith, emeritus professor of flute at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Immigrant Justice Initiative accompanies asylum seekers finding their way in a new land and is currently supporting a mother and six children. Reserve a place for the concert here-- in person or livestream. For more information contact the Side With Love ministry team.
Join our weekly protest
Join us every Monday, 7:30-9 am or 4:30–6:00 PM at the corner of Franklin St & Elliott Rd in Chapel Hill for a weekly, nonpartisan protest and call to action. Across the political spectrum, Americans are disillusioned by leaders who put power over people. We gather to build community, spark hope, and inspire action. Bring a friend. Bring a sign. Wear your yellow Side With Love T-shirt, if you have one. Speak up for immigrant rights, free speech, healthcare, social security, the environment, the Constitution and the rule of law, reproductive freedom, and the many other issues close to our hearts. Bonus points for signs that encourage others to move beyond honking and help turn awareness into action. Free parking at Church of Reconciliation, 110 N Elliott Rd.
side with love in action
In January members of the Community Church CH UU participated in the monthly protest outside the Durham Crisis Pregnancy Center. Such centers function primarily as anti-abortion centers, where mis-information is given to women seeking help. We were part of the group from Interfaith Voices for Reproductive Freedom. Join us for the monthly pickets.
Faith leaders advocacy day
On Tuesday, May 13, Faith leaders from the Community Church Chapel Hill UU joined with other faith leaders active with Interfaith Voices for Reproductive Freedom. We were broken into small groups and met with targeted legislators to speak with them about a series of bills of great concern. The bills were introduced and supported by conservative evangelical Christians. Our group of progressive faith leaders worked with and met with legislators to voice our faith and value concerns about bills that are anti-trans people, anti-DEI, anti-teen medical rights, and a broadly, stated book ban in schools. The morning ended with a media conference. Reverend Kaleb Graves spoke on behalf of the North Carolina Justice Ministry UU. If you would like to help out with such efforts, please check in with people active at the church’s Side with Love table.
Interfaith Voices for reproductive freedom
Members of the Side with Love team at the Community Church joined with the other 12 congregations of Interfaith Voices for Reproductive Freedom for the advocacy day on March 25 at the NC General Assembly. The day was organized by Equality NC and Planned Parenthood South Atlantic. We were speaking up for people’s rights to control their own bodies.
You can vote work in action
On Sunday, August 25, thirty four people from the Community Church attended the You Can Vote training session. Attendees learned all about how to register people to vote and then to follow up with them close to the election if they have not yet voted. It was an exciting afternoon with great training, terrific attendance and good food. Wendy Jebens organized the training with good help from the UU the Vote team at church. Please join us.
After participating in training with You Can Vote, attended by several members of the Community Church, Wendy Jebens did voter registration at Durham’s Museum of Life and Science. Second You Can Vote training coming up at the Community Church on Aug. 25th from 12-2:00. Come join us.
