CAPITAL FUND: building on our legacy
|
The 2018 Capital Campaign addressed our dream of creating spaces to foster beloved community for the future: Spaces for a thriving Religious Education program for all ages; spaces for committee and ministry meetings and for our myriad other regular and special gatherings, all accessible, spaces to more fully live our mission.
Our original plans encompassed a new wing plus numerous renovations to our existing space. Unfortunately, rising costs eventually drove us to narrow our procurement scope to the essential new construction. With many willing volunteers, we did what renovation work we could do ourselves, while the other improvement projects were deferred (but not forgotten) until after the construction phase was completed. Beginning in 2019, the congregation supported a “Close the Gap” campaign to cover the construction cost and ensure that long-term debt would not burden future church operating budgets. That resulted in a tide of enthusiastic fundraising, increased pledges, early pledge fulfillments, and generous donations by church groups and households who were able to do so. As of March 2021, it became clear that, with fulfillment of existing capital pledges as scheduled, the Gap will be ZERO by June 2022! |
So now what lies ahead for the Capital Fund? As part of the overall stewardship policy of the church, the Capital Fund will continue to accumulate assets to support an ongoing Capital Improvement function. The list of (not-forgotten!) deferred capital improvement projects will be assessed, updated and prioritized at regular intervals, as a responsibility of the Board’s Finance Committee with input from the congregation and staff. As resources permit and priorities dictate, projects will be undertaken each year, with management by the Buildings and Grounds ministry.
