C3HUU Interactive History Timeline
Introduction |
Many have asked "How did the Community Church of Chapel Hill become what it is today?" One way of depicting our Community Church history is through accumulating events, facts, and photos of key people and events. The application you should see below this text is an interactive timeline which allows you to "scroll through" our church's history.
In the spirit of the oft-repeated Santayana quote (from The Life of Reason, 1905): “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” We present our history so we can all learn and appreciate the traditions here at our Community Church of Chapel Hill, UU. Thank you for sending any updates or suggestions to: [email protected] |
Click or select this text to access a large screen version of the timeline above which is easier to use on smartphones, tablets, and iPads.
Using the Timeline
The C3HUU History Timeline is embedded above as an interactive graphical depiction of our church history. You may drag on any link or section near links or on the timeline scroll left and right through events over the years. Many of the entries have images and/or web links associated with them. Click on any entry and you will see a window pop-up which will detail the date(s) of the event and possibly an image and allow you to access related links that you can "click through" to other web sites for more details. There is a control on the right you may use to see more timeline entries at a glance over a wider timescale (- sign), zoom in (+ sign) to see more details over a smaller time window, zoom left (<), or zoom right (>). The information popup (black box on the left) and the categories index (popup on the right) may be minimized to better view the timeline entries.
A short history of the establishment of the Community Church of Chapel Hill (C3H) is contained in the transcript of an interview with minister emeritus charlie kast posted here on our c3huu.org web site. A more detailed summary of key events and people involved at C3H has been pulled together on this Community Church of Chapel Hill (C3H) History Timeline which is an interactive graphical summary of major events and milestones at the Community Church of Chapel Hill.
Some of the links on our church leaders include audio or text of interviews with them from various resources including the C3HUU Sermon Archive and the excellent Document South project collaboration with UNC which has been collecting oral history since the 1970s and put their archives online recently.
Follow-up Activities
This timeline is actively under review and update. Several people associated with C3HUU have contacted the Communications & Technology team about including information from prior efforts at cataloging the history of the Community Church of Chapel Hill. Future activities include:
