Our Proud Shared History of
Social Justice Leadership
Our church began in the 1950’s as part of the fight for racial integration, leading the way with the first integrated preschool in the South, civil rights demonstrations and church shelter for Freedom Riders.
Our church was a founding member of the Inter-Faith Council in the 1960’s and today continues to open doors for the homeless and the hungry.
In the 1970’s, our church developed an AIDS Support Group and initiated an outreach and ministry for divorced people and single parents.
In the 1990’s, our church opened its doors to provide sanctuary for Gulf War conscientious objectors, and began offering OWL, comprehensive sexuality training for all ages.
In the 2000’s, our church voted to be a welcoming congregation for all races, beliefs, and sexual orientations, and leads the fight for marriage equality, voting rights, environmental stewardship, affordable housing, and aid to the unemployed and immigrants.
