Sexual Content:
There are occasional sexual innuendos in the lyrics and dialog. There is a dream sequence in which four women dressed as genies/harem ladies dance around men and then with them in an opium den. At the end of the show, the audience votes to match up two "lovers" for the evening. One of the matches could be a brother and sister.
Violence:
There is a dream sequence in an opium den in which one of the main characters has a vision of murdering another character - two actors play out the scene behind a screen with slow-motion, stylized strangulation. There is talk of Edwin Drood being murdered but this doesn't occur on stage. Some details of the death (like a bloody coat) are mentioned on stage.
Language:
A character sings a song called "The Garden Path to Hell" in which the word 'hell' is repeated several times. A character calls the other characters "sh*ts".
Social Behavior:
An older man becomes obsessed with the younger woman he's in love with, and in one scene physically restrains her to the point of hurting her so that she'll listen to him. A character sings a song describing the dark tale of how she became the proprietor of an opium den.
Drugs/Tobacco/Alcohol:
One of the scenes takes place in an opium den. Another character is frequently drunk, drinking, or asking for a drink.
