Description of Group from Elizabeth:
My name is Elizabeth Szypulski. Some of you might already know me -- I helped with the Coming of Age group last year and the middle school youth group a few years back. I was raised UU in Clemson, South Carolina, and I was the chair of the campus ministry group at UNC. Right now, I design and write curriculum for an educational website run by Goodwill Industries.
This year, I'm coordinating a civil rights history discussion group for the youth at our church. Anyone in the high school youth group is invited to join, though we're aiming for a small group -- 10-12 max. We'll be talking about the civil rights movement and the events that led up to it, especially in North Carolina. We'll also talk about the ways that the struggle for racial justice and equity is still going on today.
We'll meet one Sunday a month for talks based on short readings that we'll mainly do together at the meetings -- I know that everyone has a lot of homework, so we won't ask people to do readings outside of the group. We'll mainly be looking at primary sources -- firsthand accounts from the people who fought for justice, as well as contemporary accounts from newspapers and magazines. We''ll also have some guests from the University and the community join us to talk about their own experiences -- nothing's finalized yet, but we're looking at some really exciting people. In place of a few of our meetings, we'll take short trips to local civil rights sites -- most likely the museum in Greensboro, as well as a few places right her in Chapel Hill.
Finally, at the end of the year, we'll all go on a trip to some of the major sites of civil rights history in the South -- Birmingham, Montgomery, Selma, and Atlanta. I think this part of of the group will be really exciting -- Marion has visited these places with youth groups before, and it's been a lot of fun.
