board of trustees nominees 2022
MARY BETH POWELL
I have been a member of Community Church for 25 years and attend with my husband, Bill Rote. My previous church leadership experience includes the Board of Trustees (2002-2005), Endowment Committee (including chair), Membership Team (including chair), Children’s Religious Education teacher, Community Day of Service co-chair (2019 and 2020), and the Human Relations committee (2018 - present). Before retiring, I worked as a public health professional. I currently work part-time at UNC as a career services coordinator. As a long-term member of this church and having served in many volunteer roles, I have a good understanding of the church's history and have seen the congregation deal with tough issues. I have also served under three different ministers (five, if one includes interim ministers during two ministerial searches). I've been involved in two capital campaigns and watched the campus grow and improve during both. My gift is one of passion for this congregation, our church community, and our service to causes and issues in the broader community and world. I bring many management skills, including human resources, financial management, strategic planning, and policy development and implementation. This is an exciting time for The Community Church, since we have a fantastic settled minister and our church is vibrant and still growing. |
KEVIN BASTIAN
My family and I have been members of The Community Church for five years, ever since we moved back to NC. Currently my wife, Michelle Itano, and I are members of the Worship Associates Ministry. Along with our children Ben and Naomi, we participate in the Family Choir, and now are part of the Fall 2022 church musical. I have also served as a Sunday Supervisor for Religious Education. Professionally, I am a research associate professor and Director of the Education Policy Initiative at Carolina at UNC Chapel Hill. To Board service, I will bring an attention to detail, an ability to understand multiple perspectives and work towards compromise, and strong communication skills. I am pursuing membership on the Board of Trustees because I am interested in learning more and contributing to the leadership and operations of the church. I believe this is an area where I can contribute and will enjoy the work. In addition, I’m interested in developing deeper relationships with church members who are giving of their time and expertise to help the church thrive. I am looking forward to this opportunity to serve the church. |
ELLIE SPEH I have been a member of The Community Church for three years and a Unitarian Universalist for eight years (in Portland, Maine and Chapel Hill), and attend church together with my husband, Chris Speh. Over the past three years, I have become involved with the Welcome Ministry (including serving as Chair); Membership Committee (including chair); Auction Committee; and as a Greeter and Welcome Associate. I am retired. To my Board service, I will bring my organizational abilities, including event planning and execution. I have previously served as a Board Member and Board Chair of other nonprofit organizations. There are so many wonderful people who belong to this church, and I would like to get to know more of them. The Community Church has a special place in my life, and I would like to give back. |
