Rev. Thom's remarks at No Kings 3.0
When I’ve spoken before at No Kings, I’ve spoken with righteous anger against this corrupt regime. This criminal regime. This racist regime. This fascist regime. This sick, sick regime.
Today though, I want to speak to all of you as a congregation. Want to tell you what I tell the people in my congregation.
Here is what we need to do to survive these times.
First, refuse to surrender your joy. Refuse to surrender your joy.
They want us afraid and alone. They want us hopeless. They want us broken.
Don’t you dare give them that.
Come together, sing together, dance together, make art together. Feed each other. Our humanity is stronger than their hate. Don’t let them take away your humanity.
Second, this is the time to support groups that are fighting for your values.
You need to boycott companies that are working against your values. But you also need to support whoever is fighting for your values.
When we are afraid, we tend to hoard what we have. This is the time to share what we have. This is the time to strengthen the resistance. This is the time to make an investment in our values.
Give to candidates working for your values.
Give to organizations fighting for your values.
Give to mutual aid.
Give to religious groups that show up for your values, that show up for you.
Third, do the next courageous thing. Do the next courageous thing. Whatever you are doing right now, figure out what the next more courageous thing is for you.
It could be making calls.
It could be knocking on doors.
It could be having hard conversations with your family.
It could be running for office.
It could be civil disobedience.
Do the next courageous thing. Keep doing the next courageous thing.
Don’t surrender your joy.
Support the groups showing up for your values.
Do the next courageous thing.
I want all of us to survive.
We will only survive if we take care of each other.
We will only survive if we stick together.
We will only survive if we fight for each other.
I love all of you.
